Demonstrating Excellence in College-Level Work in High School

At BASIS International School Bangkok, we offer a comprehensive and academically rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) High School program that sets the standard for college readiness. Our High School students have the unique opportunity to engage in Advanced Placement classes, allowing them to study college-level material starting in Grade 9. This program is a cornerstone of our curriculum, designed to challenge students academically and give them a head start toward success in higher education and beyond.

Administered by the College Board, Advanced Placement® (AP) courses and exam scores are objective measures that assess high school students and allow them to bypass, and in some cases earn credit for, introductory college courses. Advanced Placement exams are a recognized standard worldwide and an integral part of the admissions process for many colleges and universities.

BASIS Curriculum School Students are Required to Take Advanced Placement Classes in All Disciplines.

Our curriculum is oriented around the idea that deep learning happens when students are challenged. This approach is best implemented in the AP Program and post-AP coursework. The BASIS Bangkok High School curriculum is structured to ensure that students are prepared for advanced placement exams and have a deep understanding of the subjects they study. The AP courses we offer span a wide range of disciplines, including the sciences, mathematics, humanities, and foreign languages, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education.

One of the key benefits of our Advanced Placement program is that it allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. By achieving high scores on their AP exams, students can bypass introductory college courses, giving them the flexibility to take more advanced courses or explore other areas of interest. This advantage is particularly beneficial for students who plan to attend competitive universities, where demonstrating proficiency in college-level coursework can significantly strengthen their applications.

Advanced Placement exam results charts

BASIS Curriculum students are 60% more likely to pass their AP exams than the average test-taker.

A higher pass rate means a higher chance of earning college credit while in high school!

Some students are able to enter select colleges as second-semester sophomores because of their Advanced Placement exam results.

Some universities where this is the case include the UC system’s engineering programs, the University of Southern California, and North Carolina State. In other cases, students use AP credit to satisfy liberal arts requirements, giving them earlier access to advanced coursework.

BASIS Curriculum School students take an average of 12.9 Advanced Placement exams by the time they graduate.

The average number of exams per BASIS test-taker in 2019 was 4.05 versus 1.8 for all test-takers who are usually seniors (in 2019, 40.2% of all AP exams were taken by seniors, while only 4.6% of our AP exams were taken by seniors). Taking AP course exams is a strong indication to college admissions representatives that students can handle college-level material.

How are average marks for Advanced Placement classes calculated?

The Advanced Placement exams are externally marked. However, their score can affect the student’s final grade in the subject (Please see the AP grade conversion chart).

How does BASIS International School Bangkok help students discover their passion or which line they want to study beyond High School?

A student’s academic passion is most frequently shown in the results they’ve achieved in particular academic areas. Students can be guided toward undertaking AP courses they’re interested in and can succeed in; over the course of a student’s academic life, the school will have accumulated considerable evidence to discuss this meaningfully. From Grade 9 onward, students will benefit from the intervention and guidance of our College Counselors, who are best qualified to advise students and their families.

If a student isn’t interested in STEM, is BASIS International School Bangkok the right school for them?

BASIS does place considerable emphasis on STEM subjects. As such, and in common with other high-performance schools, it may not offer the most suitable curriculum for some. Comparably, math and science are common core curriculum subjects in most schools. BASIS students encounter high-level math and sciences more frequently at an earlier age and develop solid foundational knowledge and skills in these subjects.

Will the school have a counselor to support students joining universities in Thailand?

Yes, our College Counselors are specially qualified to guide and advise students and their families regarding university admissions in Thailand and abroad.

How is the school building connections and partnerships with local universities?

Our College Counselor team is positioned to develop and strengthen these connections.

For students and parents interested in learning about the international curriculum in Thai universities, do you invite their representatives to share the overview or open a booth at the school?

Presumably, our students will wish to consider a range of good colleges and universities in Thailand and abroad. Our College Counselors help develop these opportunities so that students and parents can be informed about their options. Our team maintains and develops relationships with educational institutions to build suitable contacts. Starting from Grade 9, the school encourages students and their families to attend various university and college fairs and information sessions.

What popular major do BASIS International School Bangkok students prefer to study at university?

Whilst the range of majors our graduates undertake is diverse, courses such as Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, International Relations, Political Science, Biology or Pre-Medicine Programs appear to be the most popular.

What connections does BASIS have with universities?

As BASIS is a US-based network, our College Counselors have built excellent relationships with a wide range of US colleges and universities. Successful applications to US institutions are extremely nuanced and somewhat unique to each college. Meanwhile, UK and European universities don’t require standing relationships with schools. Instead, they’ll examine every applicant’s transcript, application, and standardized exam results and are likely to offer an admission interview. We actively seek to build bonds with Thai universities and possibly leverage our parent network to develop these connections.

Will there be an invitation to a college fair, or will information about the universities be available online?

We’ll endeavor to start college fairs, both within the school and by visiting other schools, starting from Grade 9.
